Cybersecurity will be top of mind in 2015 for the Inspector General of the Health and Human Services Department. In its work plan for next year, HHS OIG says it will heavily focus on federal oversight policy for medical devices and electronic health records. The office will investigate security measures at hospitals around the country, which it hopes will have a positive impact on patient privacy and their access to Medicare. In order to participate in Medicare, hospitals have to maintain specific cybersecurity measures for their records and devices. The OIG’s work plan also extends beyond the Health and Human Services Department. The office will also keep an eye on the Food and Drug Administration because the FDA also deals with medical device security.
