Federal News Radio and Ackerman Security Systems Community Spotlight are the Brainy Camps of Children’s National.

Brainy Camps of Children’s National is a consortium of residential camps, family camps, year round support groups and retreats for children with 10 chronic health conditions including epilepsy, diabetes, NF, congenital heart, and sickle cell disease. With a motto of “Have fun and Live Well, ” the camps promote healthy communities where children learn to manage their conditions, and share their hopes and dreams.

Nestled in the Shenandoah Valley of West Virginia, campers have the opportunity to fly on a trapeze, drive a go-kart, climb a rock wall, and ride a horse, under the supervision of medical experts from the Washington, DC area’s top hospitals. Whether singing by the campfire or participating in support groups, campers learn strategies to reduce their fears, gain knowledge to manage their conditions, and explore options related to health and life goals.

Hundreds of campers and staff attend Brainy Camps of Children’s National each summer and develop friendships that last a lifetime. Many campers go on to become counselors and leaders at the camps and in their communities. Brainy Camps serves children with high functioning autism, Tourette syndrome, heart disease, epilepsy, sickle cell anemia, cerebral palsy, neurofibromatosis, Type 1 diabetes, Down syndrome and childhood obesity.
