Federal News Radio and Ackerman Security Systems Community Spotlight for October is the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the nation’s largest voluntary health organization dedicated to finding a cure for blood cancer. LLS’s mission is to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families. Since inception LLS has invested more than $1 billion in research for better cancer treatments.

Volunteers are the lifeblood of the organization. Thousands of driven, motivated individuals join the fight each year – helping to raise funds and awareness for the more than one million Americans afflicted with blood cancer. There are many ways to get involved – fundraise for one of our many campaigns, become an advocate for our patients, or help out in the office during your free time.

Upcoming events include:

Light The Night Walks – Walk to the end of cancer with LLS this October. More than 10,000 people in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area will walk with illuminated balloons at dusk, in support and in honor of those fighting blood cancer. Walkers who raise at least $100 are Champions For Cures, and receive a t-shirt and balloon, and access to the evening’s entertainment, food and beverages. There are three walks in the Washington, DC area – Saturday, October 11 in Rockville, MD; Friday, October 17 in Reston, VA; and Saturday, October 18 in Washington, DC. www.lightthenight.org/nca

Train To Beat Cancer with Team In Training – the nation’s largest non-profit endurance training program. TNT has trained 600,000 participants to complete a marathon, half-marathon, triathlon or century ride, since its inception in 1988. These individuals have raised more than $1.4 billion for blood cancer research and patient services, helping to save lives one mile at a time. Join the team for the Rock’n’Roll New Orleans Marathon & ½, Rock’n’Roll DC Marathon & 1/2, or an upcoming century ride or triathlon and train to beat cancer! www.teamintraining.org/nca

After a successful inaugural year, raising $386,000, the Student of the Year campaign returns to the National Capital Area this fall. LLS is seeking motivated high school students to join the fight against blood cancers. Students will raise funds for six weeks beginning in early January, with the top fundraiser receiving a $5,000 scholarship. All participating students who reach their fundraising commitment will receive a $1,000 scholarship. Currently accepting applications at www.lls.org/nca.
