Companies may have to report cyber breaches

A new bill would require companies to notify consumers and the government when personal information is exposed in a cyber attack. The sponsor, Republican Representative Mary Bono Mack of California, is holding hearings on the bill this week. NextGov reports Mack's proposed law comes in response to highly publicized cyber breaches at Sony and Epsilon. Mack's staff promises an aggressive schedule to move the bill through committee. A hearing tomorrow will take in testimony from the Federal Trade Commission, Chamber of Commerce and several privacy groups. A similar bill passed the House last year but not the Senate.
