October 14, 2014 — Today’s guests are an unlikely pair: David Rey, senior vice president at Salesforce and Curtis Wilburn, director of Operations at the USDA Office of Operations.

At first glance you may ask, “What in the world is Salesforce doing in the federal government?” Listen to the interview and you will be enlightened.

A few years ago the federal government was mandated to move to the cloud, but not give any real guidance. Considerations had to be given to security that were different than the commercial world. Federal information professionals had to deal with an unusual acquisition system. The result has been a slow adoption. The net result is large agencies have not been able to take advantage of savings that the cloud offers.

During the interview, Rey outlines how Salesforce can be an option when looking at the cloud. They can set up systems quickly, bill flexibly, and react to dynamic changes at the drop of a hat. Wilburn gave a frank review of his past experiences with software deployment and then his rationale behind selecting Salesforce.

Salesforce certainly is not the solution for every federal need. However, the experience that Wilburn has had will give every listener pause to consider a solution that is gaining rapid acceptance in federal, state, and local governments.
