The Transportation Department, NASA and the Environmental Protection Agency received two awards for leading practices in openness and transparency.

The White House recognized DoT in the Leadership, Governance, and Culture Change category, EPA and NASA in the Participation and Collaboration group and all three agencies received awards for their flagship initiatives.

Overall, the administration recognized eight agencies with The Leading Practices Awards.

“These awards recognize those agencies, as selected by their peers that have outlined the best and most innovative strategies for promoting open government over the next two years,” wrote Aneesh Chopra, the federal chief technology officer and Cass Sunstein, the administrator in the Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs, in the open government blog last week. “Awards were determined on the basis of evaluation of the plans against the definition of ‘Leading Practice’ by the agencies themselves. Leading practices are meant to inspire a ‘race to the top’ among government agencies for greater openness and innovation. These awards represent the very best of the best in Open Government Plans — exemplary of the high levels of creativity and innovation that can be found in the open government activities of our federal agencies today.”

The White House also updated the open government dashboard, which shows 17 agencies earned green scores in all categories, while 12 have at least one yellow score. No agency has earned a red score.

Along with DoT, NASA and EPA, the other winners included:

  • The Department of Health and Human Services in the Transparency category.
  • The Department of Treasury joined NASA and EPA in the Participation and Collaboration division.
  • The Department of Interior, the General Services Administration and the Office of Personnel Management joined NASA, EPA and DoT by earning recognition in the Flagship Initiatives category.
