Information exchange and sharing is critical to keeping an agency connected.

Now, the General Service’s Administration’s Office of Governmentwide Policy is developing a new tool to make information sharing more efficient by setting controls on data and determining the attributes of the types of employees who should have access to it.

“It’ll be a tool where we can share attributes about individuals,” said Kathleen Turco, the associate administrator of the office. “That would then allow the users to make decisions to allow access to data or information.”

The office is now formulating the “rules of the road” for sharing data, Turco said, with help “behind the scenes,” from the Office of Management and Budget, the Homeland Security Department and the Office of the Director of National Intelligence.

Turco said the project is about half way to completion. “This is a huge effort,” she acknowledged, adding that she considers it only the first round in a larger effort. “We’re hoping it’s an excellent product, but it may need refinement as we go,” she said.
