Visitors to Archives honor Reagan with diaries

WASHINGTON – The National Archives and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library is offering children a chance to imagine a day in the White House and create their own presidential diaries.

The “Your Day as President” family event runs Friday through Monday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. As part of a celebration of what would have been Reagan’s 100th birthday, one of his personal diaries will be on display through July 5.

So, what are people actually at the event saying they’d do if they were President for a day?

“I’d do my best to try to make it so that people aren’t as hostile to each other,” said Thomas, a high school senior from the Southern California.

“I’d definitely reform the education system,” said his teacher. “It needs to be about the kids and it’s not right now.

Jacob, 11, from North Carolina, disagreed, saying “I would sign a bill saying kids don’t need to go to school so long,”

Others were less pragmatic.

“I’d have my chef prepare some really nice meals for me,” said Michelle Judd, from Michigan.

“I’d take Air Force One, and just travel around the world for a day,” said Timothy Hart, from Oregon. “That’d be worth it alone.”

The personalized diary entries that families create at the Archives will be shared with former first lady Nancy Reagan.
