The Homeland Security Department has had management issues since its foundation nearly a decade ago. But the Government Accountability Office is finding some signs that the department is heading in the right direction.

David Maurer, the director of homeland security and justice issues at GAO, joined In Depth with Francis Rose to discuss the watchdog agency’s latest report on the progress DHS has made

DHS provided GAO in December an updated plan for being removed from the high-risk list, which Maurer said provides the agency with a sound “roadmap” for doing so.

However, the caveat, Maurer said, is that the agency actually has to executive on those plans.

Since DHS was created in 2003, GAO has made more than 100 recommendations spanning financial management, human capital, IT and acquisition.
