A federal workgroup will meet in February to find solutions to the bed bug problem.

The Federal Bed Bug Workgroup is scheduled to hold its second summit on Feb. 1 and 2 in Washington, D.C., according to the summit website. The agenda includes summarizing progress since the last summit in April 2009, presenting bed bug-related research and proposing the next steps to tackle the potential public health problem.

As Federal News Radio reported previously, the workgroup consists of the Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Agriculture, Defense Department, Health and Human Services, and the Centers for Disease Control.

An EPA release offers some tips for people to prevent bed bugs:

  • Remove clutter where bed bugs can hide
  • Seal cracks and crevices
  • Vacuum rugs and upholstered furniture
  • Wash and dry clothing at high temperatures
  • Monitor for bed bugs to prevent a major infestation
