Recently, the Navy successfully tested an unmanned jet with take-offs and landings on conventional runways. The plane, dubbed X-47B, is bigger and faster than other drones. Now the Navy is moving to test whether unmanned, fighter-sized jets could safely operate off of aircraft carriers. We got details of the program from Captain Jaime Engdahl, the Navy's Program Manager for the Unmanned Combat Air System Demonstration. Federal News Radio also learns, the Navy hopes to have a squadron of up to six unmanned jets operating off a carrier by 2018. That from Sean Stackley, the assistant Navy secretary for research, development and acquisition.
