The Army is pouring lava on its mine-resistant trucks in Afghanistan. No, not the kind that comes from volcanoes. The material is called Cold Lava, a laminate product that protects trucks' windshields.

The Defense Logistics Agency has been supplying Cold Lava to protect Black Hawk helicopters for several years. Now it will apply Cold Lava to the ballistic glass on Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicles (MRAPs).

DLA officials said the Army saves $14,000 each time it avoids having to replace a windshield. Cold Lava, and products like it, have been used by stock car racers for many years. Officials estimated the film could save the government $75 million annually.
