Army picks Android

The Army is one step closer to deploying cell phones to soldiers. Wired magazine reports the Army has picked Google's Android operating system for a prototype smartphone currently under development. The Army is working with Mitre Corp on the project, and plans to release a platform development kit for app creators in July. Included in the prototype platform are mapping, a Blue Force Tracker program, and "Critical messaging" capabilities.
