U.S. expands missle defense in Asia

The missile strategy was mainly aimed a North Korea, China was the long term elephant in the room, one Congressional Research Service staff member said.

The United States is planning to expand missile defenses in Asia. It will use a powerful early warning radar system situated in Japan.

The Wall Street Journal reported the plan is to give the U.S. a better hedge against aggression from North Korea now and China later. The missile shield is part of the Obama administration’s military strategy of shifting resources towards Asia. Defense planners are worried about China’s newly aggressive moves into the South China Sea.

A staff member from the Congressional Research Service told the Journal, while the missile strategy was mainly aimed a North Korea, China was the long term elephant in the room.
