The Senate Armed Services Committee has approved, by a voice vote, the nomination of Ashton Carter to be deputy secretary of defense.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has not set a date for the full Senate to vote on the nomination, the committee press office told Federal News Radio.

Carter has served as under secretary of defense for acquisition, technology and logistics since 2009. He would take over for Bill Lynn, who announced his resignation in July.

Lynn has agreed to stay in his job until his successor is in place this fall.
