ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky State Police say six people from Wisconsin were killed and two were injured today when their SUV was rear-ended by a tractor-trailer and burst into flames on Interstate 65. Minutes later, another crash in the opposite direction injured three, one critically.

The initial crash at 11:13 a.m. EST occurred on northbound I-65 south of Elizabethtown. Master Trooper Norman Chaffins says in the second crash, four vehicles collided at the same location but on the southbound side.

Police say all occupants of the SUV were from Marion, Wis. Among the dead were three adults, a teenager and two foster children. The two survivors in the SUV were also foster children. Their injuries are said to be non-life-threatening.

The southbound crash involved a tractor-trailer and three other vehicles. Police are investigating whether rubbernecking was the cause.
