Obama backs New Orleans mayor for re-election

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama has endorsed New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu's campaign for re-election.

Obama says no one embodies New Orleans values of resilience and commitment to a brighter future better than Landrieu. In a statement, Obama says Landrieu is a fierce advocate for jobs, education and crime-reduction, and has earned a second term.

Obama plans to campaign heavily for Democratic candidates in 2014 but has offered few endorsements.

The president is more popular in New Orleans than in other parts of conservative-leaning Louisiana. In November, Obama and Landrieu appeared together at a New Orleans port, where Obama praised the mayor during an infrastructure event.

Landrieu is the incumbent but faces challengers. His sister, Louisiana Sen. Mary Landrieu, is preparing for a difficult re-election campaign this year.
