WASHINGTON (AP) -- Major league baseball and the U.S. Navy are sharing common ground in an unusual awards ceremony in Washington.

The first three recipients of the Bob Feller Act of Valor Award are being honored Wednesday at the U.S. Navy Memorial.

They are Navy Chief Hospital Corpsman Garth Sinclair, Detroit Tigers Pitcher Justin Verlander and Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Yogi Berra of the New York Yankees.

The award was created by Major League Baseball to recognize the Feller's achievements. The Cleveland Indians pitcher interrupted his Hall of Fame career to enlist in the Navy after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941. He served despite his eligibility for an exemption.

Feller died in 2010 at the age of 92.
