State CIOs to expand online info-sharing program

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) is joining the federal committee to expand Web-based information sharing tools.

The National Association of State Chief Information Officers (NASCIO) is joining the federal committee to expand a Web-based information sharing system for government, Government Computer News reports.

The National Information Exchange Model (NIEM) is a data framework at agencies and states that is designed to automate information-sharing with “collaborative interests in justice, law enforcement, public safety and emergency response,” GCN reports.

NIEM could provide a framework for sharing health information among federal and state government agencies, GCN reports.

NASCIO was involved in the Global Justice Information Sharing Initiative, which originally launched NIEM and other IT projects for government, according to the organization’s website

“We’re very glad to accept this invitation to join the NIEM Executive Steering Committee,” said Kyle Schafer, NASCIO president and CIO for the state of West Virginia, in a statement. “Membership on the committee really formalized something we’ve been doing for some time – actively supporting NIEM as a national standard. With membership, we’ll play a more active role working with the committee.”
