Acceptance of Unified Communications has been gradual as vendors continue to play catchup in certain areas.

But Government Computer News reports that more and more UC success stories are popping up around the country.

In Marin County, Calif., telecommunications manager Barbara Layton says new voice technologies have become the most popular application the county has ever introduced.

“Employees can access their email, voice mail messages, calendar appointments and other information with voice commands on any telephone” by using Speech Access from Avaya.

GCN reports the technology could be attractive to agencies with a large population who work from home.

In Oklahoma, the Army National Guard began to use videoconferencing in the late 1990’s to deliver training to the desktop, eliminating travel costs. Now, the same networks that carry data also carry voice and video for conferencing.
