December 30, 2014 — Today’s guest is Jim Benson, the senior vice president at Human Touch LLC.

The discussion revolves around four letter words. No, nothing the FCC would be knocking on the door of Federal News Radio, but three popular terms: Software as a Service (SasS), Platform as a Service (PaaS), and Infrastructure as a Service (Iaas).

During the discussion, Benson elucidates upon the subtle differences between these confusing platforms. After the technical definitions are explained, the interview heads down some interesting roads.

He mentions that it is not in a government contractor’s best interests to recommend a cost savings system like PaaS. After all, they are locked into a contract where they can get paid to do business the standard old way.

What motivation do they have to change?

The fact of the matter is that many agencies are getting crushed in budget decisions. The tried-and-true methods are too expensive and time consuming to renew.

Agencies must take a look at alternatives like getting away from institutional software development processes. The new world of constant change will force software developers, procurement professionals, and federal contractors to change the way they do business. Listen and learn.
