This week on Federal Tech Talk, host John Gilroy interviews Dan Chenok, vice chair of ACT-IAC, and Rick Smith, co-chair of ACT-IAC’s Smart Lean Government Initiative.

Most listeners know that ACT- IAC is a nonprofit group that brings together federal and civilian information technology professionals. The group accomplishes this through its annual Executive Leadership Conference, other events and Special Interest Groups (SIGs). One of those, the Planning & Architecture SIG, is promoting a Smart Lean Government Initiative.

The idea is that federal information systems need to take advantage of some new concepts in enterprise architecture. One concept in software development is called “lean.” Essentially, it is an outgrowth of some manufacturing principles that were popularized in Japan.

Smart and lean concepts take this approach and apply it to software development. During the interview, you can hear Rick elucidate upon the aspects of manufacturing that eliminate waste, and how that can be applied to software development and systems integration.
