Stopping government fraud

Host John Gilroy will talk fraud prevention with Larry Benson, director of Strategic Alliances at LexisNexis Risk Solutions. February 21, 2012

February 21, 2012 — In today’s economy, government agencies simply can’t afford to be defrauded, but it is happening all the time.

Unfortunately, if a government program exists someone is finding a way to defraud it – and the American taxpayer is paying the price.

For example, The Washington Post recently reported that $753 million is lost each year due to improper payments or fraud through programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, aka food stamps.

Similarly, a USA Today article noted that $39.1 million in federal tax refunds were improperly issued to inmates and prisoners.

Education is the key to detecting and preventing fraud.

LexisNexis recently launched a forum called “Fraud of the Day”, and it’s designed to help educate government officials about how people are defrauding federal, state and local government programs.

The forum enables agencies to learn about types of fraud perpetrated against government by fraudsters across the country, so they can effectively prevent it – and more efficiently spend taxpayer dollars.

On today’s show, Larry Benson, director of Strategic Alliances at LexisNexis Risk Solutions, will talk about the “Fraud of the Day” program, and how LexisNexis is working with government agencies to stop fraud.
