The Air Force has long been securing the skies and helping lead the way into space. However, top officials say that is no longer enough. For nearly the past three years, Lt. Gen. Peterson says the USAF has been working on ways to ensure US superiority in cyberspace. Much of the focus has been on the competition among several communities to be the home of the new Cyber Command, provisionally at Barksdale AFB. Yet while the Air Force is no closer to deciding where the command is eventually located, Peterson says the real work has been, and will always be, done by the squadrons and that the key to the new Cyber Command may eventually rest, not in a physical environment but a virtual one. He also talks about the impact the new Cyber Command is having on basic training.
