August 27, 2013 — Healthcare information technology is always a popular topic on Federal News Radio.

One way that IT is used to improve outcomes and reduce cost is with the general topic classified as “quality improvement.”

Today’s interview is with Mary Nicholas, CEO, and Jim Moyer, director of Survey Quality at an organization called the Healthcare Quality Association on Accreditation (HQAA).

They work in the world of quality improvement in healthcare IT using tools provided in the cloud.

In order to reduce fraud and abuse the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services has instigated a set of best practices for quality control.

They were developed in 2008 and the CMS has given ten organizations what is called “deeming” authority to approve organizations who comply with the detailed list of quality measures.

The HQAA is one of the deeming authorities.

During the discussion, you will hear Nicholas detail the way she started the association in 2003, right after the Medicare Modernization Act was passed.

Moyer is one of the people who performs “surveys” or inspections of facilities to see if they comply with quality measures that the CMS wants to see.

This assures that the CMS is not wasting money by paying for inadequate medical goods and services.

If you are interested in a practical way to improve outcomes and reduce costs, then the interview with applying CMS principles will be of value to you.
