June 11, 2013 -- This week on "Federal Tech Talk", host John Gilroy interviews Dan Juengst, senior cloud strategist for Red Hat.

Amid all the attention given to moving to the cloud, nobody really takes the time to define terms to see what aspect of cloud technology a federal IT professional should be concerned.

The interview starts off with giving insight on understanding some basic terms—open government, open data, and, finally, open source software.

You may be surprised that the National Security Agency is one of the contributors to the several open source endeavors, including Linux.

After establishing the basics, Juengst delineates between a private, public, and hybrid cloud.

Today, Red Hat is having tremendous success with federal agencies helping them manage data in the cloud.

Some of their products assist in the deployment of hybrid clouds through concepts like Iaas (Infrastructure as a Service) and PaaS (Platform as a Service).

The interview ends with comments on security in a wide range of cloud environments.
