GSA\'s Edward Meyman, Kris Rowley and Ryan Swann join host John Gilroy to discuss how to understand and analyze big data. March 31, 2015

March 31, 2015 — Today we take three subject matter experts from the General Services Administration and have a conversation about how to understand big data.

In studio is Edward Meyman technical manager at GSA, Kris Rowley, chief data officer, and Ryan Swann director of Data Analytics at GSA.

If there is one characteristic of a federal information professional, it that they certainly don’t suffer from too little data.

The real challenge is to try to derive actionable information from the data that is presented.

But the challenge doesn’t end there, increasingly users expect data presented to be able to be manipulated.

Recently appointed federal CTO’s have said that the federal government must reimagine how they deliver the intended result using information technology.

In other words, it is not enough to present a chart or graph reflecting information, today, users expect to be able to play “what if” scenarios with data.

This interactivity is difficult when combined with goals that include security and new information being presented daily.

During the interview we have three perspectives on how to accomplish this difficult task.

Each has a unique perspective and the topics discussed include data portals, mashups, and comprehensive data analytics.
