Executive director of GSA’s 18F stepping down

Greg Godbout is leaving his job as executive director of the General Services Administration's 18F innovation lab in early April.

Greg Godbout will be stepping down in early April as the executive director of the General Services Administration’s 18F innovation lab.

“Greg was instrumental in getting 18F off the ground and creating early successes for our clients — and I am grateful for his vision and leadership,” GSA’s Acting Administrator Denise Turner Roth said, in a release.

No word yet on where Godbout is heading, but GSA said he would be taking on another opportunity in government.

“One of the most unique and important features of 18F is how they have embraced the technology startup mentality,” Roth said. “They started with a small group of forward thinking technology leaders and piece by piece they have built a team that continues to think like a lean startup — working quickly and being customer focused. Like many startup organizations, there comes a time when the leadership who played key roles in the beginning will leave to create new ventures.”

Before coming to 18F, Godbout was a 2013 Presidential Innovation Fellow. An entrepreneur and software architect, he is also the owner of the Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse, an entertainment venue in Northern Virginia.

Aaron Snow, 18F’s principal deputy executive director, will become 18F’s acting executive director. Snow was one of 18F’s first team members.

“I have always appreciated Aaron’s energy and insights and look forward to working with him,” Roth said.

Godbout’s move is the latest in a series of leadership shifts at GSA. Dan Tangherlini stepped down as GSA administrator on Feb. 20, for a job in the private sector. Roth assumed the job as acting administrator at that time.

Sonny Hashmi, who has been GSA’s CIO since January 2014, confirmed to Federal News Radio Tuesday that he is leaving government in early April for the private sector. GSA’s current Deputy CIO, David Shive, will step into the role as acting CIO.
