The National Institute of Standards and Technology has released a new draft of its biometric identification standards.

The National Institute of Standards and Technology has released a new draft of its biometric identification standards. Eye scans are in, and fingerprints are out.

The document details technical requirements for the use of iris imaging to identify federal employees, instead of fingerprints. It also drops the use of swipe sensors to gather fingerprints.

Government Computer News reported that while swipe sensors are smaller and less expensive than other fingerprint-gathering methods, NIST found they are not as effective.

The document is open for comment until Aug. 15.
