May 13, 2010 — Maj. Manny Dominguez had never started a technology organization from scratch. But by June, he not only will have built out the Defense Department’s new Medical Education and Training Campus from the dirt, but did it on time and under budget.

DoD is consolidating five facilities into the new campus as part of its Base Realignment and Closure effort at Ft. Sam Houston in Texas.

Dominguez is overseeing the installation of state-of-the-art technology infrastructure, including a 2-mile radius wireless network that is outside and inside of campus buildings, a platform to quickly adopt Web 2.0 tools and virtualized network and storage servers.

He made an important decision early on only to accept software and hardware that DoD already approved for use on its networks. Dominguez says there were several applications that he had to reject because there was no time to get them certified in time for the opening of the school.

Dominguez says students will begin classes in June and he expects more than 1,700 faculty and staff and 5,700 students when the campus is fully operational later this year.
