The size of the federal workforce has never been a more potent political issue. Although the federal government continues to employs one in six workers nationwide, that number is dropping. According to a recent report in The Atlantic, government employment is dropping as fast as it ever has since the 1940s.

Tom Shoop, the editor-in-chief of Government Executive, joined In Depth with Francis Rose to discuss the size of the federal workforce and where, geographically, the workforce is situated.

In a blog post on GovExec, Shoop listed the five states with the highest percentages of government workers (including state and local):

Alaska	29.6 percent
Washington, D.C.	29.1 percent
Maryland	24.9 percent
Virginia	23.6 percent
