One of the jobs that the government IT community has been watching carefully is President-elect Obama’s proposal to create a government CTO — a chief technology officer.

During the campaign, Obama said that the CTO will ensure that the government and its agencies have the right infrastructure, polices and services for the 21st century.

There have been some high-profile names discussed: Google’s Eric Schmidt (who reportedly turned down the offer) as well as Google’s Vint Cerf, Microsoft’s Steve Balmer and Cisco’s Allan Balutis.

Eric Lundquist, the editor in chief of eWeek, tells us more about this new position and the evolving list of candidates. Click to hear the interview.
