The Department of Energy is set to release an accident report today concerning an incident at the Waste Isolation Pilot Project in Carlsbad, N.M. In early February, a salt haul truck caught fire underground, closing the repository indefinitely. The problem is radiation has been detected on the surface. The Los Alamos National Laboratory has promised to remove 4,000 barrels of nuclear waste stored above ground. Edwin Lyman, senior scientist with the Union of Concerned Scientists and co-author of the new book "Fukushima: the Story of a Nuclear Disaster," discussed proper nuclear waste removal with Tom Temin and Emily Kopp on The Federal Drive.
