The Marine Corps might switch to a private cloud to host its Global Combat Support System. Right now the system is controlled by the Defense Information Systems Agency. The Marine Corps says it wants to boost IT efficiencies, minimize risk, achieve performance objectives and reduce the total cost of ownership. The branch hopes a private cloud system can do all of that and more. The Marine Systems Command already has a request for information out to guage the feasability of a switch. The deadline to respond is pretty quick, though. Responses to the RFI are due by February 21st. The Marine Corps wants a single systems integrator to manage 15 different systems. NextGov reports the total value of the contract won’t go beyond 49 million dollars over three years.
